Hello Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School Community!
We are on track to open for our first day of school on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 and are making preparations for our Grand Opening Ceremonies in July as well! As construction moves forward, we will be sharing more photos and updates here, as well as on our district’s official website at www.cvesd.org.

We would love input on our school’s mascot and school colors. If you have not already done so, kindly complete this form: https://forms.office.com/r/wkuirhC0Ff
You may also scan the QR code below using your cell phone. Note that this form will close at the end of April 2024.

Help Our School Thrive!
We would love parent and legal guardian support in helping our school community thrive! There are many ways to get involved more in your child’s education. To access information for our parents and legal guardians: https://sotomayorelementary.org/information-for-parents/
We need parents to serve on our School Site Council (SSC), English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), and Parent Teacher Association (PTA). More information about these groups is below. If you have not already done so, kindly complete this form:

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL (SSC) is an elected 10 member group: the Principal, 3 classroom teachers, 1 non-classroom staff member, and 5 parents. The SSC meets monthly to ensure that all supplemental resources are focused on providing a strong academic program that ensures student success and achievement. This includes reviewing student progress, test scores, school budgets, school safety, district updates, and the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). School Site Council meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month from 2:45 to 3:45 PM. SSC meetings are open to all parents; however only elected representatives are voting members. We currently have four parent seats open (each a two-year term) and elections for SSC will take place during Curriculum Night.
ENGLISH LEARNER ADVIOSRY COMMITTEE (ELAC) is a school-based committee that meets bimonthly whose role is to advise the principal and the SSC on programs and services for English Learner students and other school issues. This is an opportunity for families to learn about the program’s legal requirements, review overall EL progress, and discuss interventions/supports needed for student success and achievement.
Additionally, this committee provides parent trainings to ensure students are successful in school. Some topics that will be covered this year will be the importance of attendance, supporting your child with homework, increasing literacy in the home, and social/emotional growth.
The Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION promotes the growth of a strong, all-inclusive school-wide community and supports the supplemental programs for Sotomayor Elementary School students.
Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School empowers students, staff, and parents to become active members of our learning community. The PTA organizes several fun events during the school year that truly bring the school’s community together, such as our Fall Festival and Family Dance!
The Month of April
Arab American Heritage Month is celebrated in April to recognize Arab American histories and cultures, and to pay tribute to Arabic cultures & the many contributions of Arab Americans to the United States. Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School (SSES) and the Chula Vista Elementary School District celebrate and honor the diversity in our community!
April is also Autism Awareness Month. The recognition raises awareness about autism acceptance and promotes inclusion and connectedness for people with autism. April is also the Month of the Military Child! Every April, all month long, we celebrate the courage, perseverance and tenacity demonstrated by our military-connected children, youth and teens and what they mean to our community.
