Snowy Owl Expectation Focus
Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. For the next week, we will continue to focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for arrival. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind during arrival.

Broadening Family Engagement Through CVESD University
The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is excited to announce the launch of CVESD University, a dynamic new program designed to engage and empower parents and guardians in their child’s education. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to fostering a collaborative educational environment where families are equipped with the necessary tools to support their children’s learning experiences.

CVESD University offers comprehensive workshops, events, and engagement opportunities tailored specifically for families. As part of the program, parents and guardians will also receive a Parent Passport and earn special recognition for their active participation in at least eight district-level events throughout the 2024-25 school year.
The inaugural workshop of CVESD University is scheduled for August 20, from 4-5 p.m. at the district office at 84 East J Street in Chula Vista. During this session, families will receive an overview of the best practices for establishing effective communication between families and school staff. Additional workshops will cover various topics, including strategies to improve attendance, fun reading strategies for home, techniques for managing stress, and more. Light refreshments will be provided.

Reading Buddies

Miss Riddle’s 1st graders and Ms. Pinkham’s 4th/5th graders have been building relationships at school through Reading Buddies! Every Friday, they meet up to read and do fun activities together. The 4th/5th graders have been amazing models to the 1st graders and it’s something they all look forward to each week. We love our Snowy Owl community!
Military Homecoming
Twenty percent of our Snowy Owls have parents/guardians who are in active military. Students from military families undergo unique challenges and experiences, especially when they are away from their loved ones. This past week, one of our Snowy Owls got a wonderful surprise during PE when she was surprised with the long awaited arrival of her father. Thank you for allowing us to be part of this heartfelt homecoming alongside your family. Additionally, we want to thank all of our current Sotomayor active military families for their sacrifice and service to our nation.

Birthday Celebration and District Wellness Policy
CVESD has a Wellness Policy. Birthday Celebrations – No celebratory food items will be allowed on school sites during the school day in celebration of a student’s birthday. Please do not make arrangements to give students food items or candy in birthday goodie bags. Some students have allergies and we do not want for a student to eat an item and possibly react to the ingredients in the item. Help us keep all Snowy Owls safe by following the CVESD Wellness Policy. To learn more, visit the following BP 5030.
