This coming week, we will be having our first Student Award Assemblies for the 2024-25 school year. We will be issuing Stellar Snowy Owl and FUERZA Awards to our Snowy Owl students:
- TK-1st Grade – Monday, August 26th at 8:15 AM
- 2nd-3rd Grade – Wednesday, August 28th at 8:15 AM
- 4th-6th Grade – Thursday, August 29th at 8:15 AM
Classroom teachers will be notifying the families of students who will be recognized in our August Snowy Owl Award Assembly.

Snowy Owl Expectation Focus
Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. This week, we will continue to focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for assemblies. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind during assemblies.
SAFETY PATROL
We are excited to share that beginning this week, during the morning drop offs and afternoon pickups, student Safety Patrol members will help direct traffic and assist with the safe crossing of students in designated areas.
Please be respectful and courteous to our Safety Patrol members as they are responsible for ensuring everyone’s safety to and from campus. Please remember to observe the crosswalks and follow the directions of the safety patrollers. If you have questions and or concerns regarding Safety Patrol members, please direct concerns to the main office and not the students on duty. Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School partners with Chula Vista Police Department for training crossing guards and appreciate your support of our Snowy Owl Safety Patrol students!
Online Safety
Parents and legal guardians, please monitor your child’s activity on cell phones, online games, and computers. Online safety includes any computers, cell phone, gaming consoles, e-readers, tablets, and other devices. It is important to discuss with ALL CHILDREN (even at an early age) the following topics:
- Netiquette
- Looking at inappropriate content
- Pop-ups/Passwords
- Not trusting everyone and everything you see online
In addition, older children (tweens and teens) need to hear from trusted adults on:
- Cyberbullying
- Sexting
- Posting personal/inappropriate information (pornography, violence, hate speech, illegal activities)
- Meeting offline with others
We recommend that parents stay calm and level-headed when speaking to children about these topics. Often well-intentioned parents threaten to take away items and punish children when they are found exploring online and that just creates other problems that could be potentially more serious down the line. Ask your child if they are aware of conflicts between students via social media, online gaming, and other apps. Build trust and answer questions they have in an age-appropriate way.

We recommend that parents monitor carefully access to online websites, gaming, and social media. Seemingly innocent websites, such as YouTube, often link to videos geared for a more mature audience, including websites and videos. Attendance Matters
We want to see our Snowy Owls at school everyday! Every week, we will continue to highlight and award those classes with the highest attendance through morning announcements. When students attend class regularly and on time, opportunities for successful learning increase. Consequently, the importance of regular on-time attendance cannot be overemphasized. Please make sure your child is here by 7:55 AM and lined up on the soccer field. School attendance is required by law. Parents/guardians of children between the ages of six and eighteen years of age are responsible for sending their children to school every day and on time. If your child must be out sick, please contact the office at sotomayor.school@cvesd.org to excuse the absence. Remember to bring a doctor’s note when going to the doctor or dentist.
