Fall Parent Conferences

As the quarter quickly comes to a close, classroom teachers will be sharing and communicating appointment times with parents for Fall Parent Conferences. Fall Parent Conferences will be taking place from Thursday, September 12th-Thursday, September 19th. We will be on minimum day schedule each of those days and all TK/K students will be dismissed at 12:50PM and 1st-6th grade students will be dismissed at 1:05PM.

During these conferences, parents will be informed on their student’s progress, beginning of year baseline data, strengths, and goals for following quarter. Working together we can support the measurable growth of each of our students.

Snowy Owl Expectation Focus

Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. For the next two weeks, we will focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for hallways and stairs. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind in our hallways and stairs.

Safety Patrol

This past week, during the morning drop offs and afternoon pickups, student Safety Patrol members began assisting with the safe crossing of students at Santa Liza and Santa Christina. We appreciate all of your patience and understanding as our students learn and practice their new Safety Patrol leadership roles.

Please be respectful and courteous to our Safety Patrol members as they are responsible for ensuring everyone’s safety to and from campus. Please remember to observe the crosswalks and follow the directions of the safety patrollers. If you have questions and or concerns regarding Safety Patrol members, please direct concerns to the main office and not the students on duty. Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School partners with Chula Vista Police Department for training crossing guards and appreciate your support of our Snowy Owl Safety Patrol students!

Attendance Awareness Month

September is attendance awareness month and we will setting our goal to have 96% attendance each week. Attendance is one of the major factors when predicting future success in school! If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Data from a California study found that children who were chronically absent (missing 2 or more days a month) were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade. Please make sure that your child is at school on time unless he/she is sick.

CVESD Parent Workshops

A new initiative at the Chula Vista Elementary School District, CVESD University is a series of workshops, events, and engagement opportunities designed for families. As part of the program, parents/guardians will receive a Parent Passport and will earn special recognition for their attendance in eight or more district-level events throughout the 2024-25 school year. All workshops will take place at the district office located at 84 East J Street in Chula Vista. Light refreshments will be provided. Please click on the link for more information and registration.
