Innovation and Library Media Technician

Dear Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School Community,

I hope this message finds you all in great spirits!

My name is Pedro Muñoz Flores, and I am excited to introduce myself as the new Library Media Technology Technician at Sotomayor Elementary.

Allow me to briefly introduce myself. I am a graduate from the University of California, Berkeley where I obtained degrees in Cultural Anthropology and Ethnic Studies. Throughout my academic experience I became passionate about fostering a love for reading and empowering students with essential information literacy skills. I believe that the library is not just a place for books but a hub for knowledge, creativity, and community.

As your new Library Media Technology Technician, my primary goal is to support and enrich the academic experience of our students. I am committed to providing resources that cater to the varied interests and learning needs of our student body. Additionally, I am eager to collaborate with teachers by supporting students to become critical thinkers, effective researchers, and lifelong learners.

In the coming weeks and months, I look forward to getting to know our students, faculty, and staff, and working together to make our Learning Commons and Library a vibrant and inclusive space for all. I welcome any ideas, suggestions, or feedback you may have, as your input is invaluable in shaping the future of our library.

I am honored to be a part of the Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School community and am excited about the opportunities and adventures that lie ahead. Thank you for welcoming me, and I look forward to a rewarding and successful journey together.

GOOO SNOWY OWLS!

National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th to October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month. The Chula Vista Elementary School District is proud to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month this year. We celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories, diversity, and contributions of our American Latino/Hispanic community.

Snowy Owl Expectation Focus

Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. For the next two weeks, we will focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for lunch tables. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind at our lunch tables.

Parking, Drop-off, and Pick-up

Traffic before and after school can be extremely busy. To help facilitate the process, we ask all vehicles to move as far forward as possible in the drop off and pick up areas before stopping. This allows more vehicles into the area, expediting the drop off and pick up process. If you  need to enter campus, please use our parking lot to park your car and visit campus. Do not leave your car unattended in the designated drop-off and pick-up zone at the front of the school. We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation, as our children learn from the behaviors that we model.

IMPORTANT:

  • Do not block or park in the private driveways of our neighbors.
  • Please do not park in any of the red, coned areas, or double park behind vehicles.
  • Unless you park in designated parking spots, use the DROP OFF zone to leave your children and pick them up.
  • Please do not park in reserved parking spots from 7:15 AM – 3:45 PM.
  • Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller-skates/in-line skates or motorized units of any kind are NOT allowed on school grounds at any time. Anyone riding a bike to school MUST wear a helmet. All bikes must be stored in the bike racks in front of the school. Bikes must be locked and students/parents/visitors must walk their bikes and scooters where pedestrian traffic takes place.

For the safety of everyone, animals are not allowed on campus unless approved by the school administration. This includes bringing dogs or other animals on the campus when dropping off or picking up your child.

Please report any safety concerns or inappropriate behavior you notice on campus to the main office.

PTA Updates

We did it! We reached our goal of 175 PTA Memberships and have earned our Pajama Spirit Day on Friday, September 20th. Thank you for coming together as a Sotomayor community and showing all of your support!

Family Dine Out Fundraiser

SAVE THE DATE! Our PTA is hosting its first family dine out fundraiser on Thursday, September 19th at Board and Brew in Otay Ranch. Share the flyer below with family and friends!

Attendance Awareness Month

Attendance is one of the major factors when predicting future success in school! If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Data from a California study found that children who were chronically absent (missing 2 or more days a month) were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade. Please make sure that your child is at school on time unless he/she is sick.

The Chula Vista Elementary School district is hosting an Attendance Competition as an end to Quarter 1. Schools, classes, or individual students can submit an entry for a chance to have their work featured on CVESD’s social media platforms. Entries can be 15 second videos (dance, chant, etc.), one paragraph essays, drawings, photographs, or anything else that can be sent via email.

Participants are encouraged to reflect on our “2 is Too Many” attendance campaign which shares the message that missing just two days of school per month is too many absences. Participants are to respond to the question: Why do you think 2 is Too Many?

Budget Advisory Committee Representative

We are looking for a parent member to represent Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School in our district Budget Advisory Committee. Please email marthairene.garza@cvesd.org if you are interested in representing Sonia Sotomayor Elementary at these meetings, which are held at the district offices at 84 East J Street, Chula Vista.
