Snowy Owl Expectation Focus

Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. For the next two weeks, we will focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for dismissal. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind at dismissal.

Grade Level Spotlights

On Friday, November 22nd, our TK, K, and K/1 combo classes participated in a balloon parade through the halls of Sotomayor. After reading Balloons over Broadway, our students completed a STEM activity where they designed their own balloon. They invited all classes to line the hallways as they walked through the hallways spreading kindness, cheer, and holiday happiness. It was wonderful way to depart our Snowy Owls prior to Thanksgiving break!

Just before Thanksgiving Break, the 4th and 4/5 combo classes got to participate in the UCSD Seismic Outreach Project. Our students worked directly with engineering students from UCSD to learn all about earthquakes, fault lines, and seismic waves. Through the Engineering and Design Process, our students built four-story structures that had to withstand an “earthquake,” simulated through UCSD’s shake tables. Our scholars learned not only about earthquakes and engineering, but they also learned about teamwork, calculating the area of a building, following a budget, and persevering through trial and error. This was a very fulfilling, memorable, and educational experience for our participating 4th and 5th grade students, and we are very thankful for UCSD including us in such an amazing program.
