We are excited to announce that “Read Across America” will be celebrated from March 3rd to March 7th! This special week is dedicated to fostering a love for reading among our Snowy Owls. Below, you’ll find details about our fun spirit days. Additionally, please communicate with your classroom teacher if you are interested in being a Guest Reader and reading a short story in the classroom on Friday, March 7th. We look forward to seeing our students partake in our spirit days this week and sharing the joy of reading together!
Snowy Owl Expectation Focus
Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. For the next week, we will continue to focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for hallway and stairs. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind in the hallway and stairs.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Coming Soon
Spring Parent Teacher Conferences will be taking place from Thursday, March 13th-March 20th. You should be receiving or may have already received information from your child’s teacher.
Our teachers will meet with each parent/legal guardian. Please honor your scheduled conference time or reschedule your time, if something comes up. Often times spring conferences are student-led so that children can articulate their learning to their families! We are also excited about the opportunity to meet with our families to share about each individual’s growth this year!
Grade Level Spotlights
Our first graders showcased their teamwork and presentation skills by creating informative charts about important African American figures in honor of Black History Month. Working collaboratively, they divided responsibilities, practiced their speaking parts, and confidently delivered their mini-biography presentations to the second-grade class. Their hard work and enthusiasm made for an engaging and educational experience for both grades!
YMCA 2025 Annual Campaign
Thank you to those who have donated thus far to the YMCA. We have raised $582 dollars and are getting closer to our goal of $2,500. Your donation of any amount from $1-100 is welcome. Any amount helps us achieve our goal.

CVESD Parent University
The next CVESD University Workshop, Conversations That Count, will be held on Tuesday, March 4th, from 4:00-5:00 PM at the district office. This interactive session will cover emergency preparedness, everyday safety tips, and more.

- Where: District offices at 84 East J Street in Chula Vista
- What: Families will learn all about emergency preparedness and safety.
Parent Advisory Committee Meeting
The district’s Parent Advisory Committee invites transitional kindergarten and preschool families to a meeting on March 6th from 4:00-5:00 PM at the district office where families can learn about Family Resource Centers and the resources they provide, including parenting support, advocacy, and assistance.
Preschool Expo Coming Soon!
The Early Childhood Education Department invites incoming preschool families to a special Preschool Expo on Tuesday, March 18th, at the district office. Families can attend either a morning session from 10:00-11:30 AM or an evening session from 4:30-6:00 PM.
