Staff Appreciation Week has arrived! This special week provides us with a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our incredible staff members. We consider ALL staff members educators, because each person on campus is here to support your child and teach them to be their best self. Therefore we will celebrate ALL 60+ staff members at Sotomayor! We want to make it a special week with snacks, treats, and prizes. Be sure to check out all the opportunities to honor our staff throughout the week. Lets come together as a community to show our appreciation for the incredible individuals who make Sotomayor such a special place to be. A huge shout out to our PTA for their unwavering support and efforts to honor our educators throughout this week!

CAASPP State Testing Starts this Week

End-of-year testing launches this week. Please make EVERY effort to make sure your child is at school, on-time every day. Students who arrive past 8:30 am will not be able to enter the classroom to begin testing. It is important to not plan vacations or doctors/dentist appointments in the next few weeks. It is important to review the assessment calendar each week, to know which days your child is testing. Your can also reach out to your child’s teacher for more details about your child’s specific testing schedule.
We encourage you to support your child by:
- Ensuring they get a good night’s sleep
- Providing a healthy breakfast each morning
- Reminding them to do their best and letting them know how proud you are
- Making sure all cell phones are put away during testing to avoid any test irregularities
- If possible, leave iWatches and other smart devices at home
Please review the important testing information below and mark your calendars with the upcoming assessment dates.

Snowy Owl Expectation Focus
Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. For the next week, we will continue to focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for recess. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind at recess.

LEAD
CVESD’s LEAD Hub program provides before and after school programs at all district schools. LEAD Hub aims to create a safe, supportive environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive. The program combines recreation, homework assistance, and enrichment activities. LEAD Hub is available at no cost for CVESD students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade and is aligned with the school calendar. LEAD Hub hours will vary by school site and depend on the school’s start and end times. Please note that not all locations have a before school program.
Spaces are limited. The highest priority is given to students identified as “unduplicated” (foster youth, unsheltered, students living in motels/hotels, temporarily doubled up, students in temporary shelters, English language learners, and socioeconomically disadvantaged students). At the time of registration, students must be identified in the district database as belonging to one of these categories. After the highest priority students are registered, additional students will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration Dates:
- Monday, May 5, 2025 – Friday, May 16, 2025 – Registration opens at 6 p.m.
- Accepted and Waitlist Notification:
- Friday, June 6, 2025 – Email notification by 6 p.m.
