Parent Leaders Needed

Are you interested in getting involved at Sotomayor? We need parents to serve on our School Site Council and English Learner Advisory Committee. If you are interested in making decisions about our school budget and School Plan for Student Achievement, please consider getting involved. Our PTA is also looking for parent leaders who would like to join the team! Please let Principal Martha-Irene Garza, marthairene.garza@cvesd.org, know if you would like to join one of the committees.

Parent Ambassador Program

The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is proud to announce the launch of its new Parent Ambassador Program, a district-wide initiative designed to strengthen the home-school connection and support high-quality learning experiences for all students. The program is part of Goal 5 of the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) to foster shared responsibility and accountability between families and schools.

Parent Ambassadors will:

  • Attend quarterly meetings at the district office.
  • Act as a bridge between families and their child’s school.
  • Champion family engagement initiatives.

To apply, interested parents/guardians must:

  • Have a child currently enrolled in a CVESD school.
  • Be available to attend quarterly meetings from 9:30-11 a.m.
  • Show a genuine commitment to family engagement and school involvement.
  • Be currently involved, or interested in becoming involved, in their school community.

Apply now to become a CVESD Parent Ambassador and make a difference. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on July 25. Selected applicants will be notified by August 1.

Only one parent/guardian will be selected for each school. Applications will be reviewed in the order that they are received. For more information and to submit your application, click below.

First Day of School

We ask that on the first day of school, all students in grades TK-6th grade report to the blacktop and line up by their teacher’s number by 8:00 AM. Please note that all students in TK and Kindergarten are released hand-to-hand to a listed, responsible adult. This is for your child’s safety.

Free breakfast is served in the cafeteria every day from 7:20-7:50 AM. Students participating in the breakfast program should enter through the gate door on the south side of the school (Santa Liza Ave) by the cafeteria.

Class begins on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 and will be a minimum day for all students. School starts at 8:00 AM for all TK-6th grade students. Dismissal for students in 1st-6th grade is at 2:30 PM Monday – Thursday and 1:05 PM on Fridays and minimum days. TK and Kindergarten dismissal is at 2:15 PM Monday – Thursday and 12:50 PM on Fridays and minimum days. Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are required to be picked up by a parent/guardian or designated emergency contact and will be dismissed from the north gate door of the school for TK and the Multipurpose Room entrance for Kindergarten. However, students in grades 1st through 6th are not required to be escorted off campus by an adult. First through third grade students will exit campus through the Main Office entrance and 4th-6th grade students will exit the campus through the Multipurpose Room entrance. Grade level signs are posted in front of the school to facilitate student pickup. Please ensure that your child knows where to meet designated adults and which adults have permission to pick them up.

Please continue to monitor the school blog for the latest information from Sonia Sotomayor Elementary: sotomayorelementary.org

Please use our traffic loop and drop off/pick up area on the east side of our school’s campus if picking up or dropping off your child by car. ALL parent drop off and pick up should be via the traffic loop in front of the main school building and then cars exit the traffic loop heading south on Santa Christina Avenue. Please do not park in the loop or leave your car unattended. Traffic loop off Santa Carolina is reserved for school buses only. Students walking to Sotomayor from their homes may enter campus through the main office.

Families, if you need to park, please do not park in the spaces designated for staff, block driveways, use driveways of homes, or park in red zones. For the safety of all, do not stop in the street in front of the school to drop off and pick up your child.

Back to School Night

Teachers will send home information regarding our upcoming Back to School Night, which will be on Thursday, July 31st from 4:15 PM to 6:30 PM. This is a night for legal parents and guardians only. We ask that you please keep your children at home so that our staff may share important information with families. Limited childcare will be provided by Sonia Sotomayor Elementary in the TK/Kindergarten playground area.
