First week of school was a huge success! Thank you for entrusting your children with us each day. I wanted to take a moment to thank each of you for contributing to a successful first week of school. We are so thankful for our teachers and staff that put in the extra effort to make the first week of the school year extra special for our Snowy Owls, as they prepare for an amazing year of learning. Your support, enthusiasm, and hard work have made a fantastic start to the year.

Let’s continue working together to make this a wonderful year for our Snowy Owls!

Snowy Owl Expectation Focus

Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. Over the next two weeks, our teachers and staff will be focusing and reinforcing the expected behaviors for recess. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind during recess.

Family Handbook

It’s a brand-new school year, which means we have an updated Family Handbook filled with all kinds of important info—from school policies to helpful tips for a smooth year. You can always find it on our school blog under “Family Handbook” for quick reference and review. Take a moment to check it out and stay in the loop!

Back to School Night

We will be having our Back to School Night on Thursday, July 31st starting at 4:15 PM where parents will get an opportunity to meet our Sotomayor staff, learn about grade level curriculum, daily routine and procedures, become a PTA member, and much more. This is a night for legal parents and guardians only. Please remember that this event is not meant to be a parent conference, it is designed to provide you with information about the class and answer general questions. We ask that you please keep your children at home so that our staff may share important information with families. Limited childcare will be provided by Sonia Sotomayor Elementary in the TK/Kindergarten playground area.

First PTA Association Meeting

Join us for our first PTA Association Meeting before the start of Back to School Night where you will get an opportunity to meet our Executive Board and learn about the fun activities planned for the coming year!

Parent Leaders Needed

Are you interested in getting involved at Sotomayor? We need parents to serve on our School Site Council and English Learner Advisory Committee. If you are interested in making decisions about our school budget and School Plan for Student Achievement, please consider getting involved. Our PTA is also looking for parent leaders who would like to join the team! Please let Principal Martha-Irene Garza, marthairene.garza@cvesd.org, know if you would like to join one of the committees.

LEAD Clubs

Our LEAD Clubs will start on Monday, August 4th. If your child is registered for a club, you should have already received a confirmation email. LEAD Club registration is on-going and if you are interested in signing up your child for classes, click here. We are looking forward to another year of enrichment activities for our Snowy Owls.

Smart Device Policy

As a reminder, the use of cellular devices during school hours is prohibited. A student may have a cell phone or cellular watch on campus, turned off during school hours and in their backpacks or collected by the student’s teacher and returned at the end of the day. Students may not carry their cell phones on their person during school hours. Use of cellular devices during school hours is prohibited.

Students may only use a cellular device before or after school for the purpose of contacting a parent/guardian/emergency contact responsible for picking them up. Prior to coming to school each day, make sure your child knows where to go after school. Sotomayor is not responsible for lost, stolen, or broken cellular devices brought to school. Violation of these terms will result in the confiscation of the cellular device and require a parent or guardian to pick up the phone from the school administrator. Read this article about giving tweens cell phones and also review a guide for families and caregivers on device safety and responsibility.
