Day with the Chef

Our district chef will be back to prepare a fresh, made from scratch lunch item to serve to our Snowy Owls during their regular lunch period on Friday, September 12th. He will be preparing a BBQ chicken wrap with grilled chicken breast, turkey bacon, romaine lettuce, cheddar jack cheese, and BBQ ranch dressing. He will also be preparing a roasted street corn salad with red pepper, red onion, and cotija cheese tossed in a chili lime dressing.
We will still offer the other normal choices that are on our lunch menu. We look forward to this fun and delicious opportunity for our Snowy Owls!
Fall Parent Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences will begin next Thursday, September 11th, and run through the end of the quarter on September 18th. Please contact your child’s teacher by email or through ClassDojo to organize for a conference time slot.
Please note that every day from September 11th-September 19th is a minimum day and all TK/K students will be dismissed at 12:50PM and 1st-6th grade students will be dismissed at 1:05PM.
During these conferences, parents will be informed on their student’s progress, strengths, and goals for the following quarter. Working together we can support the measurable growth of each of our students.

Snowy Owl Expectation Focus
Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. This next week, we will continue to focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for hallways and stairs. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind in our hallways and stairs.

Safety Patrol

This past week, during the morning drop offs and afternoon pickups, student Safety Patrol members began assisting with the safe crossing of students at Santa Liza and Santa Christina. We appreciate all of your patience and understanding as our students learn and practice their new Safety Patrol leadership roles.
Please be respectful and courteous to our Safety Patrol members as they are responsible for ensuring everyone’s safety to and from campus. Please remember to observe the crosswalks and follow the directions of the safety patrollers. If you have questions and or concerns regarding Safety Patrol members, please direct concerns to the main office and not the students on duty. Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School partners with Chula Vista Police Department for training crossing guards and appreciate your support of our Snowy Owl Safety Patrol students!
Parking, Drop-off, and Pick-up
Traffic before and after school can be extremely busy. To help facilitate the process, we ask all vehicles to move as far forward as possible in the drop off and pick up areas before stopping. This allows more vehicles into the area, expediting the drop off and pick up process. If you need to enter campus, please use our parking lot to park your car and visit campus. Do not leave your car unattended in the designated drop-off and pick-up zone at the front of the school. We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation, as our children learn from the behaviors that we model.
IMPORTANT:
- Do not block or park in the private driveways of our neighbors.
- Please do not park in any of the red, coned areas, or double park behind vehicles.
- Unless you park in designated parking spots, use the DROP OFF zone to leave your children and pick them up.
- Please do not park in reserved parking spots from 7:15 AM – 3:45 PM.
- Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller-skates/in-line skates or motorized units of any kind are NOT allowed on school grounds at any time. Anyone riding a bike to school MUST wear a helmet. All bikes must be stored in the bike racks in front of the school. Bikes must be locked and students/parents/visitors must walk their bikes and scooters where pedestrian traffic takes place.
For the safety of everyone, animals are not allowed on campus unless approved by the school administration. This includes bringing dogs or other animals on the campus when dropping off or picking up your child.
Please report any safety concerns or inappropriate behavior you notice on campus to the main office.
September is Attendance Awareness Month
September is Attendance Awareness Month, and the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is celebrating by launching the Squishmallow Attendance Hunt! From September 2nd through 19th, Squishmallows will be hidden across schools in the district to encourage students to be in school every day and on time. Since their hiding spots are a surprise, the best way for students to join the fun is by showing up to school consistently. Be sure to check out CVESD’s social media to follow the hunt and see where Squishmallows have been spotted. Will one visit Sotomayor? Our Snowy Owls are on campus every day — don’t miss your chance to be part of the excitement!

Grade Level Spotlights
Our kindergarteners proudly showed off the letters they have been learning after completing their ABC Bootcamp and ‘strutted their stuff’ with their ABC Fashion Show on Wednesday, September 3rd!
Our Snowy Owls helped our little ones celebrate by lining the halls to cheer them on! We appreciate all of our Snowy Owls for supporting our kinders and making this a special event for them.

Our sixth graders got an opportunity to test their engineering design skills as they crafted spears given provided specific limitations as part of their social science unit of ancient civilizations. They competed and tested durability and distance as they threw their spears on Friday afternoon!

Family Movie Night
We are excited to invite you to Sotomayor Elementary School’s Family Movie Night taking place on Friday, September 12th, sponsored by our wonderful PTA. This event is the perfect opportunity for families to relax, have fun, and enjoy a movie in our MPR. Doors will open at 4:00 PM. Check out all the details below.

Reflections Program

The Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boosts student confidence and success in the arts and in life. In Reflections, students submit artworks in the available arts category areas and program divisions: Primary (Pre-K – Grade 2), Intermediate (Grades 3-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), High School (Grades 9-12), Accessible Arts (All grades welcome). This year’s theme is I Belong! Please share with your families and, if possible, introduce the program to your students in class. This is completely student-led (grown-ups can support, but the idea and execution should be the student’s). More information can be found here.
Family Dine Out Fundraiser
SAVE THE DATE! Our PTA is hosting its first family dine out fundraiser on Wednesday, September 17th at Ululani. Share the flyer below with family and friends!

Multilingual English Learner Services
Sonia Sotomayor Elementary and the Chula Vista Elementary School District support Multilingual English Learners (formerly known as English Language Learners). All students classified by the state of California as MEL status participate in daily designated and integrated ELD, or English Language Development. This often looks like extra small group or one-on-one support. Please see the information below and contact your child’s teacher with any questions.

Lost and Found
We have begun to accumulate many jackets and water bottles in our Lost and Found. Please take a moment to browse our Lost and Found by the main office for any of your child’s items. Be sure to label all jackets and items with your child’s first and last name. All items not picked up by Friday, September 19th, will be donated to charity at the end of the quarter.
