English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

*Please note that public elections will occur at the first meeting of the school year in August 2025.

English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) is a school-based committee whose role is to advise the principal and the SSC on programs and services for English Learner students and other school issues. This is an opportunity for families to learn about the program’s legal requirements, review overall EL progress, and discuss interventions/supports needed for student success and achievement.

Additionally, this committee provides parent trainings to ensure students are successful in school. Some topics that will be covered this year will be the importance of attendance, supporting your child with homework, increasing literacy in the home, and social/emotional growth.

ELAC Meetings are scheduled in the morning bimonthly and generally last about 45 to 60 minutes in duration.

  • Elected officers of the ELAC include:
  • Chair – to facilitate the meeting.
  • Vice-Chair – to facilitate in the absence of the chair.
  • Secretary – to document actions and discussion and to ensure that agendas and minutes are shared to the public.
  • DELAC Representative and DELAC Alternate Representative – to attend monthly meetings at the district and share information with the SSC and ELAC.
  • ELAC members and officers serve one year terms.

All Sonia Sotomayor ELAC Meetings follow Robert’s Rules of Order and are subject to the Green Act of the state of California.
