Who is best qualified to make decisions about a school? Policymakers in states across the country agree that those who are directly involved with schools and students on a day-to-day basis — teachers, parents, and other school employees — can make some of the best decisions. This belief led to the creation of the School Site Council (SSC).

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL (SSC) is composed of five elected parent/community representatives and five elected staff/teacher representatives. The role of the SSC is to develop, approve, and monitor the School Plan for Student Achievement.
*Please note that public elections will occur at Back to School Night at the beginning of the school year.
With a few exceptions, meetings are likely to be held the second Wednesday of every month. These meetings generally last between 45 to 60 minutes in duration. All parents and staff are welcome to attend, though only official members of the SSC may vote in meetings. Council members serve for two year terms.
The School Site Council (SSC) oversees the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) and carries out the following duties:
- Obtain recommendations for, and review of, the proposed SPSA from all school advisory committees.
- Develop and approve the SPSA and related expenditures in accordance with all state and federal laws and regulations.
- Provide ongoing review of the implementation of the SPSA with the principal, teachers, and other school staff members.
- Make modifications to the SPSA whenever the need arises.
- Annually (and at each quarter) evaluate the progress made toward school goals to raise the academic achievement of all students.
- Carry out all other duties assigned to the SSC by the district governing board and by state law.
All Sonia Sotomayor SSC Meetings follow Robert’s Rules of Order and are subject to the Green Act of the state of California.
Elected officers of the SSC are:
- Chair – to facilitate the meeting.
- Vice-Chair – to facilitate the meeting in the absence of the Chair.
- Secretary – to document actions and discussion and to ensure that agendas and minutes are shared to the public.
- DAC Representative and DAC Alternate Representative – to attend monthly meetings at the district and share information with the SSC.
