Student Conflict and Bullying Information
Kindness counts!
Wondering how to support children if they experience a problem with another student? We suggest using “I feel…” statements, moving away from others, and seeking help from an adult nearby. Our staff prides itself in actively monitoring students at all times. What our staff has noticed recently is that students are learning how to interact with one another and having some problems or conflict. This is not bullying. It may be due to trauma and other sudden social-emotional issues with a child. What is bullying? Check out this document:
You can also see this helpful infographic below:

Students must learn how to use their words to solve conflict. This is an essential skill for healthy human beings. Healthy human beings set and respect boundaries with others.
If you have a concern about another child’s behaviors impacting your child, we suggest you first contact your child’s teacher.
Wellness Policy
Healthy school and wellness policy reminders: There is no sharing of food or drink allowed at school. Students have allergies, religious restrictions, and dietary restrictions. Please do not send any junk food (such as gum, candy, chips) or sugary drinks to school. In addition, families may not bring treats, candy, cupcakes, or fast food to share with the class for birthdays and other celebrations.

Online and Internet Safety
Parents and legal guardians, please monitor your student’s activity on cell phones, online games, and computers. Online safety includes any computers, cell phone, gaming consoles, e-readers, tablets, and other devices. It is important to discuss with ALL STUDENTS (even at an early age) the following topics:
- Netiquette
- Looking at inappropriate content
- Pop-ups/Passwords
- Not trusting everyone and everything you see online
In addition, older students (tweens and teens) need to hear from trusted adults on:
- Cyberbullying
- Sexting
- Posting personal/inappropriate information (pornography, violence, hate speech, illegal activities)
- Meeting offline with others
We recommend that parents stay calm and level-headed when speaking to students about these topics. Often well-intentioned parents threaten to take away items and punish students when they are found exploring online and that just creates other problems that could be potentially more serious down the line.
Ask your student if they are aware of conflicts between students via social media, online gaming, and other apps. Build trust and answer questions they have in an age-appropriate way.
Online safety continues to be a hot topic in our community! We encourage parents to check out additional resources for online safety at https://www.missingkids.org/netsmartz/videos#elementary.

Per the Sonia Sotomayor School Family Handbook, students are not permitted to use cell phones, Apple Watches, or other personal communication devices on school or district property. This includes the use of these devices on a field trip under the supervision of district employees and on school buses to and from school or district-sponsored trips. This increases student safety on our campus and for the safety of all students.
Vaccine Information
Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School would like to share an important FAQ about vaccines for students here. The district encourages everyone to get vaccinated once they are eligible to do so. There is more information available from the County of San Diego here.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office at (619) 216-6511.
Free COVID-19 Testing
Antigen take-home rapid tests are available for families free. Contact our school office at (619) 216-6511 for more information. PCR testing for staff and students is available via Campus Clinic kiosks at three locations. Please verify testing hours and locations as they are subject to change. The most updated schedule can be found at www.cvesd.org.
Please contact the school office with questions.
Please know that we will communicate with parents on the latest guidance from state, county, and district officials regarding the safety of students on Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School’s campus.
Weekly, voluntary testing will continue on our school campus via Campus Clinic each week. Parents and legal guardians must opt-in to the program and no child will be tested without proper consent. If families would like to watch a video on the registration process, they can visit: https://campusclinic.org/how-to/. For community testing at the kiosks, individuals will need to register on-site. You only need to register one time for a test through the kiosk.
In alignment with our district’s commitment to keeping your student healthy and in school, we are excited to expand Campus Clinic’s health services by adding the flu combo test to our weekly COVID-19 testing program. This combo test is designed to provide results for symptomatic individuals for some of the most common illnesses, such as Flu A, Flu B, RSV, and COVID-19. This testing is provided at no-cost or free to families, but Campus Clinic is required by the state of California to collect insurance information. Campus Clinic will also be providing other essential public health services.
MedLab2020 may call or email families to verify insurance information for individuals who have tested with Campus Clinic previously. MedLab2020 is the lab that Campus Clinic partners with to process COVID-19 PCR & flu combo tests administered through weekly in school testing, as well as at the four kiosks throughout the district. They are part of the letterhead on most of the results sent out. Please feel free to direct any questions or concerns you may have to the Campus Success Team.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the information above, please call or email our Campus Success team.

School Safety Plan
Our school updates its annual safety plan throughout the year. The school’s Safety Committee meets to update its actions and goals to monitor the implementation of this plan. The full document is not available for public viewing as this is one of the ways that we ensure students, staff, and visitors remain safe on our campus. We work with our district’s Emergency Preparedness Manager and various agencies on updating the safety plan each year to reflect best practices.
Sonia Sotomayor Elementary and the Chula Vista Elementary School District are in constant communication with our community partners, including local law enforcement and public safety agencies, such as the Chula Vista Police Department and Chula Vista Fire Department.
To review the public copy of the Safety Plan, please schedule an appointment with the front office staff or principal.
