National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th to October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month. The Chula Vista Elementary School District is proud to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month this year. We celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories, diversity, and contributions of our American Latino/Hispanic community.

Snowy Owl Expectation Focus

Our goal at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment for all and hold students accountable for being positive forces within our school community. The Snowy Owl Expectations are taught, modeled, and practiced throughout all grade levels and locations around campus. For the next two weeks, we will focus and reinforce the expected behaviors for lunch tables. We appreciate your support in asking your Snowy Owls at home what specific behaviors allow them to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind at our lunch tables.

Squishmallow Attendance Challenge

We will be raffling off the squishmallows at the end of the month! Drawing will be held on September 30th.

  • All students that attend every day the last week before Fall Break (Sept. 15-19) will automatically be entered to win, so encourage students to come EVERY DAY!
  • Winners will receive the squishmallow when they return from Fall Break. It will be delivered to their school site.

Make sure your student is here everyday this week so they can join in on the Squishmallow Attendance Challenge!

District Wellness Policy

Just a quick reminder: our district wellness policy encourages healthy choices to support the well-being of all students. In keeping with this, we ask that birthday celebrations at school focus on non-food items.

Looking for fun alternatives? Consider donating a small item like a pencil, book, eraser, or another engaging treat to help celebrate your child’s special day in a meaningful way. Thank you for helping us create a healthy, inclusive, and joyful environment for every student!

Fall Break is Almost Here!

Fall Break begins on Monday, September 22nd and continues through Monday, October 6th. School will resume on Tuesday, October 7th, which will be a minimum day with dismissal at 12:50 PM for TK and Kindergarten, and 1:05 PM for 1st through 6th grade. We hope everyone enjoys a restful break and quality time with family and friends.

During the break, students are encouraged to continue learning by accessing district-supported online programs such as i-Ready Math (for Kindergarten through 6th grade) and Achieve3000 Reading (for 2nd through 6th grade). These can be found on the student sign-on page. If you need your child’s login information, please reach out to their teacher. And don’t forget—reading for fun each day is one of the best ways to build strong reading skills!
